SUTTON IN CRAVEN PARISH COUNCIL – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 1.      Why is Sutton in Craven Parish Council installing CCTV?

The Council is introducing CCTV to enhance safety and security of its staff, residents, visitors, and assets in Sutton Park. The cameras aim to prevent and detect crime, reduce anti-social behaviour, and improve public safety.

2.      Where will the CCTV cameras be located?

CCTV cameras have been installed at:

  • Sutton Park

 3.      Who operates and monitors the CCTV system?

The CCTV is owned by Sutton in Craven Parish Council and is operated by :

  • The Proper Officer is the Systems Manager
  • Authorised personnel only – System users

4.      Does the CCTV record 24/7?

 Yes. The CCTV system operates and records 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Footage is securely stored for 30 days before being automatically over written unless required for investigation. If footage is further processed by North Yorkshire Police, this will be retained under the Management of Police Information

 5.      Can the cameras record images at night?

 Yes. The cameras are equipped to capture images.

 6.      Will cameras be used to spy on people?

 No. The CCTV system is in place for Staff and Public safety and crime prevention, not for surveillance of individuals. Cameras are positioned to monitor public spaces, and privacy zones are applied to ensure that private properties are not recorded.

 7.      Will the CCTV cameras record audio?

 No. The system does not have audio recording capabilities to ensure privacy is maintained.

 8.      Who can access the CCTV footage?

 Access to CCTV footage is strictly controlled. Only authorised personnel and the Police can view or retrieve recordings. Members of the public do not have access.

 9.      Can I request to see footage myself?

Yes. Individuals have the right to access footage in which they appear by submitting a Subject Access Request for a reasonable reason, which the Data Controller deems necessary due to the Data Protection Act and General Protection Data Protection and Safeguarding, which the  Requests must be accompanied by proof of identity.  10.   What if I  have had personal items stolen vandalised or damaged, Can I access   

  CCTV recordings?

 If you have been a victim of theft, vandalism, or damage to personal property in the park covered by CCTV, you should report the incident to the Police. They can review the footage as part of their investigation and determine whether it contains relevant evidence. Members of the public cannot directly access recordings but may be able to obtain information through the police.

 11.  How can I raise a concern or complaint about the CCTV system?

 Concerns or complaints can be directed to the Parish Council.
